Even the movie ‘The Dictator’ has lessons for hotels

You either love it or you hate it. I had the pleasure of seeing ‘The Dictator’, Sasha Baron Cohen’s newest movie, last night and thoroughly enjoyed it for what it is – a slapstick piece of risible nonsense. Yes, it’s crude, and yes, the jokes require an IQ of no greater than 80 to process. But I was never expecting some grand contribution to the dramatic arts. If you can switch off reality for an hour and a half, then you’ll be laughing nonstop. The story of ‘The Dictator’ portrays the eccentric tyrant, Admiral General Aladeen, of the fictional rogue North African state, Wadiya, who travels to New York City for peace talks at the United Nations. Most of the humor in this raunchy ‘fish out of water’ tale plays around with common stereotypes held for Muammar Gaddafi, Kim Jong-Il and their ilk as well as terrorists like Osama Bin …

Ringing the Bell to Open the TSX

Today, Larry Mogelonsky had the honour of ringing the opening bell for the Toronto Stock Exchange, as part of a contingent from Canadian Institute for the Blind. This was part of the celebration of Vision Month, the annual fundraising event for the CNIB. For those who have not done this before, the presentation is quite ceremonial: it is held in a television studio that is part of the Exchange Tower in downtown Toronto, and totally separate from any of the trading action. Still, it was a pretty interesting event, and we're glad to be a part of helping CNIB reach its goals. Click here to watch the video.

In Search of Hotel Excellence: Montage Beverly Hills

There are few markets so quintessentially related to luxury as Beverly Hills. Here, within a few blocks of the famous Rodeo Drive are several of the world’s most recognized venues: Peninsula, Four Seasons, Bel Air, Regent, Beverly Hilton and Montage Beverly Hills. Montage, a relative newcomer to this esteemed group, has quickly established its position. Is it the best of the group? That is a matter of personal opinion. While some guests will show a personal preference, all will agree that the Montage Beverly Hills is one incredible property. General Manager, Hermann Elger, is master of the house. I had an opportunity to ask him a few questions and learn about how he delivers service excellence to one of the most challenging guests in the world: celebrities. 1. Montage is one of the finest properties, catering to a demanding level of clientele. Tell me a little bit about how you …

Fisher Island, Is it Really as Bad as They Report?

Like most people reading this blog, I wake up Sunday mornings to the New York Times; gravitating to the hotelier’s favorite of the Sunday Travel section. This past week, the cover page’s lead article focused on Fisher Island Hotel & Resort just off of Miami’s South Beach. It was hard to miss the article as the reporter was traveling with her mom for the Mother’s Day edition. And this was not just any regular columnist, but one of the newspaper’s bureau chiefs! With almost three full pages of negative salvos launched at this ultra-luxury slice of Floridian paradise, I can just imagine any hotelier reading the Sunday paper was saying to themselves, “Thank goodness it wasn’t me!” Think of the PR value of this damaging appraisal. Public relations management tools generally calculate the value of any reporting to be about two to four times the cost of the equivalent space …

Hail to the Chief! An Interview with the Chief Steward of the Fairmont Royal York, Mike Braykovich

Most articles devoted to food & beverage talk about some new chef, food costs or techniques. Rarely, however, do they mention the unsung back-of-the-house heroes – the Stewarding Department. The position of Chief Steward is often overlooked and misunderstood. A good chief steward makes everyone in F&B shine; a great one is a rare find. We are fortunate in Toronto to have such an individual at one of our landmark properties. Mike Braykovich proudly holds this title at the Fairmont Royal York, managing a team of 75 for this 1,472 room property. For those unfamiliar, the ‘Royal York’ as it’s known locally has been a centerpiece of the Toronto skyline since its completion in 1929, is directly opposite the city’s main train terminal and financial district, and is the primary lodging for the British royal family and other heads of state whenever they visit the city. The hotel’s F&B …
